I. The Incantation for Purifying the Heart
Most High Terrace Stars, responding to change without ceasing. Drive out evil and bind the goblins; preserve life and protect the body. May wisdom be bright and pure, and heart and spirit be at peace. May the three hun souls endure forever, and the po souls suffer no loss. Swiftly, swiftly, as the law commands!
II. The Incantation for Purifying the Mouth
Cinnabar-red spirit of the mouth, spit out filth and dispel foul vapors. Spirit of the tongue, keep to right order, open the way of life and nourish the spirit. Luoqian, spirit of the teeth, repel evil and guard the true. Spirit of the throat, mighty as a tiger guard; spirit of the qi, draw up the saliva. Spirit of the heart, Danyuan, let me commune with the true. Spirit of thought, refine the fluids, that the qi of the Tao may ever endure. Swiftly, swiftly, as the law commands!
III. The Incantation for Purifying the Body
Heavenly Worthy of Numinous Treasure (Lingbao Tianzun), give comfort to my body and form. The hun and po souls of your disciple, the five zang organs, dark and profound. Azure Dragon and White Tiger in teeming ranks of honor guards; Vermilion Bird and Black Tortoise attend and guard my true self. Swiftly, swiftly, as the law commands!
IV. The Incantation for Calming the Earth Spirits
The Primordial calms and settles all, proclaiming to the myriad spirits. True officers of the peaks and rivers, the Earth God and numinous powers of the land. Spirits of the soil on the left and of the grain on the right, do not be recklessly alarmed. Turn back to the right path, clear and pure within and without. Each keep to your own quarter and guard the altar (household) courtyard. The Most High has given command to search out and seize evil sprites. Divine kings who protect the law, guard the chanting of the scriptures. Taking refuge in the Great Tao: origination, prosperity, benefit, and steadfastness.
V. The Incantation for Purifying Heaven and Earth
Heaven and earth are what is so of itself; foul qi disperses. Mysterious void within the grotto, radiant and bright is the Great Origin. Mighty spirits of the eight directions, let me be so of myself. The talismanic command of Numinous Treasure proclaims to the nine heavens: qian luo da na, dong gang tai xuan; slay demons and bind evil, deliver people (kill ghosts) by the thousands and ten thousands. The divine incantation of the Central Mountain, the jade text of the Primordial: recite it once, and illness is dispelled and years prolonged. It patrols the Five Peaks, and the eight seas hear of it; the demon kings bow their heads and attend and guard my carriage. Evil and filth dissolve and scatter, and the qi of the Tao ever endures. Swiftly, swiftly, as the law commands!
VI. The Golden Light Incantation
The mysterious source of heaven and earth, the root of the myriad qi. Having cultivated widely through a hundred million kalpas, I bear witness to my divine powers. Within and beyond the Three Realms, the Tao alone is supreme. My body holds golden light, which covers and shines upon my person. Looked at, it cannot be seen; listened to, it cannot be heard. It embraces heaven and earth and nourishes all living beings. Receive and uphold it ten thousand times, and the body will shine with light. The Three Realms stand guard; the Five Emperors attend to welcome me. The myriad spirits pay homage; thunder and lightning do my bidding. Ghosts and demons lose their nerve; sprites and goblins forget their form. Within there is the thunderclap; the thunder gods hide their names. Profound wisdom penetrates through and through; the five qi rise and surge. Golden light, appear swiftly, cover and protect this Perfected one. Swiftly, swiftly, as the law commands!
VII. The Incantation for Offering Incense
The Tao is learned through the heart; the heart relies on incense to convey it. Incense burns in the jade censer; the heart dwells before the Emperor. The true spirits look down; the immortal banners draw near the carriage. May your servant's report pass straight through to the nine heavens.
VIII. The Xuanyun Incantation
Cloud-seal script in the great void, at the beginning of the vast kalpa. Now far, now near; now sinking, now floating. Wandering through the five directions, more than a zhang in size. The Heavenly Perfected Sovereign took up his brush and wrote it down, to expound the grotto chapters, and next to write the numinous talismans. The Primordial descended and the true text was widely spread. Clearly, it exists; dimly, it is not. Chronic illness can heal of itself; those drowning in worldly toil can be lifted up; the dark underworld will have something to rely on. Thereby one ascends to the capital of the immortals.
