The Great Emperor of the Eastern Peak said: Heaven and earth are impartial; the gods observe and examine. They do not send down blessings because of offerings, nor send down calamity because of lapses in courtesy. Whoever has power must not use it to the full; whoever has blessings must not enjoy them to the full; the poor must not be bullied to the full. These three follow the cycle of heaven's course, which comes round and begins again. Therefore, if one does good for a day, even though blessings have not yet come, calamity is already far away. If one does evil for a day, even though calamity has not yet come, blessings are already far away. A person who does good is like grass in a spring garden: you do not see it grow, yet each day it increases. A person who does evil is like a whetstone: you do not see it wear away, yet each day it diminishes. Harming others to benefit oneself is something to guard against most strictly. Even a hair's breadth of good, do it to help others; even a hair's breadth of evil, urge others not to do it. Take clothing and food as they come, and happiness follows as what is so of itself. What need is there to cast hexagrams or seek divination? Deceiving others is calamity; forgiving others is blessing. The net of heaven is vast, and retribution comes swiftly of itself. Follow my words carefully, and gods and humans will respect and submit to you, and both humans and heaven will revere you.
