At that time the Primordial Heavenly Worthy (Yuanshi Tianzun), in the Grand Canopy Heaven (Daluo Tian), on Mount Yujing, spoke this True Scripture on Being Born in Heaven and Attaining the Tao for the hosts of heavenly immortals. He said to the immortals: I will now briefly open body and mind for you and clearly proclaim the essentials of the Tao. The immortals of the ten directions who have attained the Tao all engaged in spiritual practice according to this scripture and so penetrated its subtle mysteries. Good men and good women, relying on fasting and precepts, make this their ford and bridge. All that is conditioned reveals the true paths; embodying this dharma form, one may receive and uphold it. If one can put aside all entanglements and forever remove defilement and attachment, so that outer forms do not enter and inner forms do not go out, then in right mindfulness the five zang organs become clear and cool and the six fu organs harmonious and at ease. The obstructions among the three hundred and sixty joints, the karma of the ten evils, the karma of the hundred and eighty vexations, all the sources of suffering and sin, are all swept away. Then draw in the true qi of supreme harmony to pour into and moisten the field of the body and the five zang organs and six fu organs; with mind and eyes observing inwardly, all that the true qi holds is clear, pure, and radiant, empty, white, and shining bright, dark and obscure. Within and without there is nothing to do; dim and silent, one arrives directly at non-action. Constantly present through past and present, hold fast to still mindfulness; from this comes understanding and awakening, the power of the Tao supports you, and the medicine of the law helps you. Then moderate food and drink, drive out the ghosts and corpse-spirits, calm the six senses, quietly illuminate the eight consciousnesses, and empty the five aggregates. Realizing the wonder of the Three Primes, one attains the Tao and becomes perfected, and ascends and is delivered as what is so of itself. At that time the hosts of heavenly immortals addressed the Heavenly Worthy, saying: From beginningless time until today, we have never heard such a scripture of the Great Vehicle. Through this we have had the good fortune to meet it, and it reaches all beings; the fruit of the Tao is perfect and bright. And they spoke a gatha: Dark and obscure, the Tao of clarity and stillness; dim and silent, the great void. Its nature and essence are profoundly still, abiding nowhere; form and mind are both stilled in the one true source.
